10/13/25: Momentum vs. Motivation: The Secret to Building Big Results

Momentum over motivation feels ironic to write about while battling a head cold—but it proves the point. Motivation is fleeting, but momentum keeps moving.

Think back to all the times you should’ve been doing something.  Chances are, more times than not, you say “I’m working on the motivation to…” but how much energy do you exert on mustering the motivation?  Probably more than you spend on the task. Motivation is the force that gets a boulder rolling, momentum is what keeps it going.

Now think about momentum.  Momentum is what keeps us moving forward.  Momentum doesn’t involve the big, sudden, use of force to get things going like motivation.  Momentum is the small pushes that keep things moving forward.  After enough small pushes, you start to see big movements.

In business, momentum is built by showing up daily—sending the email, making the call, posting the content. None of these feel huge in the moment, but stacked together, they create real results.  This is coming from personal experience…starting is hard!  Making the decision to become a business, knowing where to start, and getting that first bit of traction.  Those are all the small wins, tiny movements of the boulder, if you will.  But with each of those small wins, you are working toward big results.  It is important to let each of those small wins push you toward the next and bigger results.  If you think back, hasn’t seeking the next win always been easier after a win?

So what are you doing today to create small wins so you can get big results later?
