9/1/25: Suicide Prevention Month: Start the Conversation, Save a Life
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, so we are going to kick the month off talking about mental health and mental well-being. Not only am I a wife, mom, business coach, literacy lover, but I am also a fierce advocate for mental wellness and mental health treatment. Mental illnesses have affected many of the people around me, and sadly, that means suicide has had an impact on my life, as it has so many.
Here are some startling statistics for the US:
- The suicide rates for men is four times greater than that of women
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of deaths for ages 10-34
- For adults 85+, suicide is the leading cause of death
- American Indians/Alaskan Natives have the highest suicide rates, with whites being the next
- Suicide rates tend to be higher in rural areas
As someone who has spent time worrying about the mental safety of those around her, these statistics are fear invoking! Also, with statistics like these, ensuring that those who need it, have access to the resources they need such as medication and counseling.
At the end of the day, suicide prevention isn’t just about statistics—it’s about people. Every one of us can play a role by checking in on friends, talking openly about mental health, and reminding those around us that needing help is never a weakness. If you’ve ever felt like you had to carry it all alone, please know you don’t have to. Reach out. Speak up. Share your struggles with someone you trust. Healing starts with connection, and sometimes one conversation really can save a life.
