6/29/26: The Mid-Year Reset
It is hard to believe the year is half done!
In life and business, April and May are transition periods – setting everyone up for the impending summer vacation. June is a business slow down and a life ramp up.
Let’s look at life in Q2 first.
As hard as Q1 was, Q2 was equally wonderful!
We had a long holiday weekend for Easter before my husband had a couple long travels for work. I was on the road for poker quite a bit in April, but at the end of the month we took our annual trip to iMagicon. Originally, this was something my oldest daughter wanted to do, but as we went for the third year, there is something each family member gets excited for. Mine is unique, book themed art work that I have no clue where I will hand 😂
May was exceptionally wonderful as we traveled to see my “little” brother marry the love of his life and added two new members to our family – the beautiful bride and her sweet daughter. I only worked poker the first weekend of May and started an eight week stint of no travel…HOORAY 🥳 I warned the girls that for wanting me home so badly, they would probably be sick of me in three weeks. So far, I think they still enjoy having me around.
The girls auditioned for the summer musical and will start rehearsal in July. My oldest started her first job. Driving lessons have begun, too. My husband and I celebrated 16 years of marriage. And the grand finale to June – my oldest and I went on her school trip to Washington D.C.!
It couldn’t all be fun. We’re playing musical rooms so I painted what was my office for my oldest to move into, which triggered my daughter to want to move, so now I am repainting her room which will now be my office, and doing some work on the bedroom she is moving into. Finally, I decided to paint my kitchen three years after peeling the wallpaper, too. I’d like to say we made progress on the bathroom remodel, but with my husband’s summer schedule, it will have to wait.
That was life April-June in a nutshell, so what about business.
Obviously business looks a lot different for me, by choice, when my kids are out of school. June was spent on some of the operational stuff I don’t make time for the rest of the year – fine tuning presentation, putting processes and procedures to paper, and connecting with new businesses and organizations via email (because driving to them just won’t fit in the schedule right now).
Working backwards, May was spent preparing my business for a summer slowdown…not stoppage. It was putting plans in motion now for things that could happen come Fall. This included reaching out for speaking and presenting opportunities and hosting my final Coffee & Coachings for early 2026.
April was exciting because I added a new Coffee & Coaching location (Carrington, ND) and hosted a workshop in Jamestown. It didn’t come without its setbacks. I had issues with marketing events in a community and due to that, I ended up cancelling a planned workshop.
One theme that kept appearing throughout Q2 was mentorship.
I began working regularly with a business coach who helps me stay focused on priorities and long-term goals. At the same time, I started giving back by providing free mentorship through an organization that has been valuable to me as an entrepreneur.
It has been a reminder that growth often happens from both sides of the table.
Strong Women, Strong Connections, a program that I co-facilitate in partnership with the North Dakota Women’s Business Center, continues to be a passionate project and something I would love to see grow in our community.
Oh, and I was appointed to the Library Board in April! Very exciting because it is a way to serve my community and feeds into a passion of mine – literacy. And, if all goes well, in the near future, I will have a chance to serve on another board that fills my heart.
It looks like a little and sounds like a lot, and the truth is, it is! Looking at it all written out, I can see why people ask how I fit everything in.
The answer is actually pretty simple: I don’t try to fit everything in at once.
I first and foremost live by a “family first” value. I spend a lot of time in April and early May locking into my business so that late May to mid August I can lock into my family.
The biggest surprise of Q2 was realizing how much progress can happen during a season that felt slower on paper. Not every quarter is about growth in numbers. Sometimes it’s about strengthening foundations, relationships, and systems.
As I look forward to Q3, it will be similar – making the most of the time that I have.
After a long holiday weekend, July is back to the poker grind, traveling three weekends in a row to have four in a row off. We will have summer musical performances and an Ed Sheeran concert with my youngest during that time. Back to school prep will happen and by mid-August I go back to work mode, but that transition will start early August when I get the kids on their school routine. Yes, we practice it all!
At no point, do I completely stop my business. My routines stay somewhat unchanged. I still get up in the early morning, but instead of planning to get everyone going for the day, I intend to have 1-3 hours of uninterrupted work. I work less hours, but I work more intentionally with the time that I get. I am more deliberate with every decision I make because my time is valuable.
Q2 Reflection Questions:
Did you create measurable goals? If yes, what did you achieve?
If you didn’t achieve something, do you let it go because it lost importance, or does it need a new timeline?
Q3 Thoughts:
What is important to you, life and business, in Q3 (July, August, and September)?
Revisit those 2026 goals and objectives. Make sure the decisions you are making align. If they aren’t, do the goals need to change, or do the actions?
What will be your BIG Q3 win?
If you’re heading into Q3 feeling overwhelmed, behind, or unsure what should come next, you’re not alone.
Sometimes all you need is a plan and someone to help you sort through the mess.
