11/3/25: November Momentum: The Secret to a Profitable and Balanced Holiday Season
I know what you’re thinking-”Melissa, it’s the first week of November…why are we talking about December?!” Because to be successful in December, you need to set the tone now. A hard fact is, you likely aren’t working 31 days in December so you need to maximize the days you have, and that is about creating momentum in November and creating systems for the holiday season. I think back to my days in social selling and November is where I made impact and income, December was resolution, reflection, and revision – let’s set you up for this!
One thing I will say about this season…and you know I’m not a fan of “hustle” or living life out of balance, BUT during this time of year, your priorities may need to shift toward business. The possibilities around the holidays are unequaled and it is the one time of year I encourage you to maximize your time and effort toward your business. So, what should you be doing in November? This will depend a little bit on your business.
Now let’s talk strategy—what you focus on in November depends on your type of business. If you provide goods, this may be a great time to highlight your top item(s). What will pull holiday shoppers to you? If you are a brick and mortar, it might be time to host an event that draws customers in. In our community of nearly 20,000 (Jamestown, ND) we just hosted the “Hop and Shop”-approximately 10 businesses organize to advertise for local shopping opportunities as the winter season begins. If you offer gift cards, a huge draw can be offering some sort of “spend $100 on gift cards, get $10 free in gift cards.” This lets people off the hook of picking out the perfect gift, but know where someone would want to shop. If you have the bandwidth, this is also a great time of year to take part in trade or craft (dependent on product) shows. Do not be shy about promoting your business this time of year.
When you offer a service, gearing up for the holidays can look a little different. A lot of industries will naturally book or sell gift cards, and don’t need to have specials. The ones that come to mind are hair stylists, nail technicians, and massage therapists. BUT if you are in one of these high demand industries, even if you are booked solid for November and December, you may want to drive some business for January and February. You could offer an exclusive discount on a service or gift card with the purchase of a high ticket service now. Or maybe you want to offer a discount on products to accompany the purchase of a service. It is also a great time to roll out a new service. Personally, I took the opportunity to roll out my group coaching Mastermind (starting in January) on the first of November. This gives people the opportunity to purchase the package as a gift for someone, something that person may not purchase for themselves. Same as with offering goods, this is not the time of year to be bashful about advertising.
Social sellers will often have holiday specials that their company offers, and these are wonderful, but don’t feel like you cannot do something on your own. Feel free to be creative (within company policy) and be the go-to person in your industry. Here are my two biggest tidbits for social/direct sellers in November, (1) participate in live events when and where possible. You reach large numbers of people who may not find our business/product otherwise and it is a great way to build connections. (2) Create packages or baskets to simplify the shopping process. We are living in a time where people want everything to be easy, so make shopping easy. Have themed baskets ready to sell, whether it is at a live event, or shared through a website or social media. And make sure you have a way to stay connected with customers. Especially if you are selling a consumable good, you will want a way to reconnect and hopefully get that follow up sale down the road.
If you are a business owner, whether you sell a service or a goods, are a social seller, work from a store front or in your home, November is the time to work your business with intention and intensity. Rarely, will I tell you to go all-in on your business, but it is time. If your personal life can handle this TEMPORARY shift in balance, do it! Because here is what will happen after you spend 4-5 weeks making things happen…you step back, you take a breath, and you wrap-up the year. We will talk about that year end wrap-up in December.
So tell me—are you ready to go all in this November and set yourself up for a strong, balanced finish to the year?
